Act I
The Hook
Diarios de Motocicleta was directed by Walter Salles and published in 2004. Before it begins to tell the story, it gives the viewers the quotation of Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, who is well known as revolutionaries, “This isn’t a tale of heroic feats. It’s about two lives running parallel for a while with common aspiration and similar dreams.” Moreover, as soon as this quotation disappears, Ernesto Guevara comes out and tells his plan about traveling South America. The quote and plan of the travel of South American make me to wonder and to be anxious to keep watching the movie.
The Complication
The complication starts when the two main characters, Ernesto and Alberto realize the trip the South America is not as easy as they thought. Unfortunately, they lost their tent by wind so that they had to find the place where to spend the night. However, they didn’t have money to afford to stay in hotel. The situation becomes they have to beg others to keep their trip.
The call to action
Ernesto and Alberto became good conversationalist. They mention the fact with exaggeration that Ernesto is a student who is in bachelor’s degree, but they insisted that Ernesto is in doctor’s degree that is not really true. They became kind of fraud in order to seek the place to stay during the trip. Therefore, they could contact and know many people in the South America.
The end of act I plot point
The plot point is when two main characters realize that the world is not really fair and tries to look for the poor and mistreat of people in the South America. The meeting one poor couple at the mine field and the lepers at the hospital, that the doctor brought Ernesto and Alberto, change the characters mind and actions. Their changes make me to hope that their actions could help the world to be changed.
Act II
The “extra-ordinary” world
In this movie, the extra-ordinary world, which is the new experience of the story with no turning back and usually things go smoothly and happily, Ernesto and Alberto go to San Pablo where the place of leper colony by volunteering. Their decision let them to hope and to be happy about they can help more peoples with their ability.
Mid Point
The mid point of the movie is that when the two main characters are helping the lepers with bare hands. They found that the disease won’t be transferred by touching the patients. Using globes could create the relationship as the ruling class and the toiling masses like separated habitats between officials and patients by the river. However, taking off globes, which the symbol of position or statue, destroys the wall between the officials and the patients also identifies the all people there are the only human beings.
The low point
The low point of the movie is the change of Alberto. Early in the story, before he goes to the leper colony, he only anxious about luxurious and sexual life, so he keeps trying to incite Ernesto to use the money that was given by Celia. However, after he goes to San Pablo, he seemed be changed. He takes off the globes with Ernesto and seems happy when he helps the patients.
Act III
Hero’s recover
Ernesto had his birthday party in the last day of staying San Pablo. The officials held party at the north part of the river where they live. Only the officials were at the party and enjoyed the party. After he blows off the candle and speeches how he enjoyed the trip and the volunteer work, he comes out of the party place and finds the boat to cross the river. He couldn’t find the boat; he decides to cross the river by swimming even though he has asthma. He really treated the patients as the same human beings, and friends. Finally he reaches the south part of the river and spends the last night there.
Ticking clock
In this movie, there is no scenes that make the viewer to be feeling nervous or curious for the next scene. Ernesto tells that he had been changed. I believe that it is very direct to message the theme of the story. Moreover, his changes by experiencing the injustices in the world made me to more respect Ernesto Guevara and to be touched by the story.
Big showdown
There is no real big showdown. But, the story ends by farewell each other at Venezuela where they decided to finish their journey.
Growth of hero
At the end of the film, Ernest said that, “Wandering around our America has changed me more than I thought. I am not me any more. At least I'm not the same me I was” He wants to change the world so that after the journey, he struggles with the injustice in the world. At the end, in the real world, he becomes the most prominent revolutionist in Cuba.
