You're probably thinking "where is Joe's analysis?".
Well, there's no way for me to exclude the tardiness on this work other than that i am a lazy bum and never get my work done :) Anyways, here it is.
I chose to analyse the scene where the explanation for the money's disappearance is presented. When Lola and Manni are talking on the phone, talkin about how the deal went down, the director is constantly cutting to the past, showing what happened, to visualize Manni's words. Another effect that should also be noted is that the flashbacks are in black and white, simply to make it more obvious that the cuts are happening in the past.
Tykwer keeps using this method of editing to establish the mood of panic and a fast paced plot. Of course, Tykwer jumps from shot to shot throughout the whole film, but i find the bit where Manni is explaining how he lost it on the subway most interesting. Manni is just leaving the subway train when he realizesthat he left the money on the train. Tykwer shows his "oh shit. oh shit!" feeling by split cutting to the bag and back to manni. the director almost made my intenstines tie a knot on themselves in sympathy for Manni. I could really relate to Manni, because i've lost very valuable things too, and the moment of [negative] realization is one of the worst feelings i know. Tykwer then continues the split cuts by cutting to Lola who is saying "die tasche" meaning "the bag". He split cuts between Lola and Manni repeating the same words, intensifying the "oh shit. oh shit!" feeling. The scene then continues with teh bum finding Manni's bag of marks, and a euphoric feeling of realization comes to his mind, as opposed to Manni's negative realization. Tykwer then transitions to the next scene by perplexingly cutting between the bum running up the subway stairs and various travel destinations he will indefinately travel to with his newly found 100,000 DM. These travel destinations also refer to Manni and Lola's exuberance if they had gotten away with the money.
Poor Manni.
