In the beginning of the movie the audience is introduced to most of the characters in this movie in a bibliographical method. The Belfonte is also introduced in the same manner, by creating a wider scope and narrowing it down to certain compartment inside the ship. The director chose this type of format to go along with the movie since the plot is to create a documentary of Steve Zissou hunting down a shark.
