Wait so we just write a script? We don't collect any type of clips in the movies the director created?

Script for Directors' project, Due 1/9:

1. On the website, as a reply to your own comment on the director, post two links that you will be using for research besides wikipedia and IMDB. You might have some luck with the resources posted on the front page here. Also post which two movies you've watched as part of your research.

2. The script should follow the following four points, and use a combination of still images, footage from the actual films (optional), researched information. It should be narrated by you.

A. The first part of your project should introduce your director. What is s/he known for? Who were his influences? What are some filmic elements that we see repeated throughout their career?

B. The second part of the script should compare and contrast different films that they've made. Show examples of their style as described in part A. This can refer to any of their movies, including ones you haven't seen.

C. Choose 1 scene from each movie you've watched and explain how they compose the shot to set mood/tone, or advance the plot. Compare the following elements of design: lighting, setting, costuming & makeup.

D. Conclusion: How do these elements that you've discussed work together to create a style and tie into theme? How do they fit into their historical and cultural time period (in other words, what effect has the world had on them, and what effect have they had on cinema?)

3. Each new shot should have the narration written in normal type and an explanation of what we're seeing on screen in italics.

As Thomas correctly pointed out, this assignment should be due 12/1 - not 11/24. However I will be out until 12/3, so please have it done by then.

DV: This week's movie assignment.

1. Choose a scene in the movie.
2. Storyboard 12 panels of the scene (so it must be a scene that has more than 12 shots).
3. Make sure to identify the different camera angles, distance, and movements.
4. Color the frames of the panels to identify continuity of camera shots. Each camera position should have its own shot. For example, if I'm doing a scene that shows 4 camera positions with a sequence ABCBCADA I'm going to color all A frames one color, the B's a seocnd, the C's a third color, and the single D frame will have its own color. Due Monday.

Reminders for shooting your music video:

1. We're looking for lighting. All groups will be required to explain what steps they took to create good lighting, and how it affects the tone of your video, and all IB students are required to have at least 1 scene that uses 3 Point lighting.

2. Steady Camera: Now that we've taken a look a lot of videos and understand the importance of a steady camera, it is a requirement that you take steps to make sure that you use good camera work in your projects. That means Tripods, Dollies, or the Shoulder Harness if you want a good 'hand held' look.

3. Cinematography. I found that many people abandoned their storyboards after they wrote them for the last project. I *don't* mind a little experimenting or creative variation - but if you go off the plan - then *re-plan*, and make sure that you get all the variations of camera positions that we're looking for.
